Inside my sketchbook week 1

As an artist and an illustrator I have always kept a sketchbook, I think its the done thing for us creatives the perfect place to put all the things you have bouncing around your head down and on to something more tangible, so here is my latest pieces, I always work best in my sketchbook which has always frustrated me, I think it feels far more natural to me then a big piece of white paper. I am still trying to get over that blank page fear….we all get it from time to time.

At the moment, I am very much inspired by colours and emotions, oh and patterns I love a good pattern, I have been using a lot of acrylic and pencil in my moleskin, its so versatile and the pages of the moleskin are off white so the paint looks so much nicer then on the stark white background.

Once again I am working away on new bearded tattooed dudes, I can’t help it I do love doodling them, the one above will be from my new Summer bearded dude collection….there will be an array of lovely bearded men, and the “Be Mine” sketch is for a piece I am working on for my boyfriend he is bound to of seen this before I send him it lets hope he likes it.

Every page is an experiment and a challenge to create all the ideas that are taking up my tiny brain space, I am such a sucker for stationary and I never cherish the pages, I love the final pieces but I love to make a mess on the pages, its always best to never hold yourself back, colours, shapes and patterns are always best when they come from the heart. I do find I am yet to create a piece that i am 100% satisfied with as artists we are always chasing the next idea or building the same one never truly reaching it, its an ongoing process and thats what I love.

Beards ahoy! I love looking at sketchbooks, and I can totally relate to everything you said. I've always found it easier to be creative when I'm working in my sketchbook, and I'm yet to feel 100% happy with a piece. xxx

    Your artwork is amazing!
I love sketchbooks, although I have a habit of having a few on the go at once, which makes me forget where things are.

Love your sketchbook work Ella! Especially the piece for your boyfriend – how sweet 🙂 Julia Pott is a favourite of mine too, another earmarked Etsy shop for a day when I have money enough to spare on things I just want to look at endlessly 🙂 xx

I love beautiful posts like this, I enjoy nothing more than peering into others sketchbooks. I might treat myself to a moleskin and some acrylic as I only ever stick to watercolour and would love a smaller little book to carry about with me like this. I hope you do more of these posts!
I also love Einaudi for creative times, perfect mood setter 🙂

Absolutely beautiful sketches. I love the feeling of that C.S. Lewis piece. Makes me think of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, when the kids get to Narnia through the painting!

    Also, Ludovico Einaudi is wonderful.

May I ask who you are drawing in the third picture? I ask because her clothing looks very similar to The Hmong people. Your work is amazing…
