Guys I am so excited to share this little blog post, its been a while hasn’t it!? Well anyone that follows me on Instagram will know I have been flat out working, I I’ve just not felt that creative urge to blog! But I thought this was to exciting to pass up and share every year I write a list of things I would like to achieve in my life and my work and up there was to create an illustrated cover to be published.
So when the amazing Samantha Baines asked me to create the front cover for her amazing new children’s book I couldn’t pass it up! As a child I suffered from server hearing issues, resulting in an extensive ear operations to help me hear and with someone who had a mother who had to wear a hearing aid to help her hear I just adored the story of Harriet, the book itself is called Harriet Versus the Galaxy, it s beautifully witty children’s book that follows the adventures of Harriet as she discovers she can communicate with aliens through her hearing aid. I just can’t wait to read it to Teddy and Matilda.
Last night was the press launch of Samantha’s book which is lovingly invited me too, to chat about the work and to hear her read the fist chapter of the book. I obviously had to drag Ben along under the guise that Sam had worked with Channing Tatum on Magic Mike and thats practically mingling with Hollywood so he felt like he had made it!? logic?! haha but anyway he came along for some need moral support but the evening was a delight and I got to speak to so many people which I think just makes the experience so much more special. It was lovely to see my illustration on a physical object. Weird but being a freelance illustrator it is often just online or occasionally in magazines.
Also Samantha shared her behind the scenes printing of the book, which is so fun to watch and I’ll be sharing with my nephew as he’s pretty curious how things are made! The book will be available from 3rd October 2019 it will be available in all good book stores and online.
One of my favourite things when asked to create the work for the book was being able to create a portrait at the back of the book which talks about the author – Samantha. me the cover illustrator and Jessica Flores who’s is an amazing illustrator that did the inside illustrations. As a child I would dream of having a little blurb written about me in children’s book and now its here its just such a joy to look at and see in person.
This is so exciting!! Well done, Ella! This book sounds amazing – I love the idea of Harriet being able to communicate with aliens via her hearing aid. I will be keeping this in mind as a gift idea for sure!
